Social Media Impact

“We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it”

— Erik Qualman.

It is obvious that in today’s society technology has played a huge role in the daily lives of almost every individual in the world. A part of why people use technology nowadays is the sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via networks which is also defined as” Social Media”.

It is ridiculous to see how much of an impact Social Media is having in people’s lives. This can involve changing the way people communicate with each other or even how we obtain information.

I use Social Media myself, however I feel like the people in this generation are so obsessed with their phones to the point where they can’t even have a face-to-face conversation with a friend anymore.

There was a time where people were able to have normal conversations with strangers in the train, whereas now people prefer looking down at a screen rather than look at each other. Although they communicate through Social Media applications such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram etc, there’s a difference between communicating with the movement of your fingers and communicating with your voice.

Social Media has also had the ability to increase the access of information
to the world. Back in the days if people wanted information about something,
they would have to go through the trouble of visiting the library to borrow books
or buy a newspaper at the nearest agency. However, people can now access the
latest updates about what’s happening around the world with just a few clicks
on their phones.

In other words, Social Media has made the lives of people much easier when
it comes to being provided with news and announcements, which saves them the
time and effort as compared to before Social Media was created.

These are only some of the many impacts social media has had and will continue having in future years to come. There’s no stopping the exponential development of Social Media whether we like it or not, as quoted by Erik Qualman who states “We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it”.

This raises a great point because we live in a world where Social Media has influenced all of us until it is almost impossible to avoid, so rather than setting our minds on who are impacted by Social Media; we should turn our focus to how these networks can be utilized to its full potential.

  1. With the ongoing development of technology, many things are now within arm’s reach. Now that social media has become a norm in today’s world, more opportunities are available. With this, I very much agree with you how social media has made people’s lives much easier with less time and effort. If this is what today brings, what do you think the future will bring?

    1. Thanks for your comment, the impact of social media has brought many positive and negative benefits. If social media continues to bring benefits like access to information then it is likely that it will only grow from there. But who knows what the future will bring, I for sure know that it’s impact will be bigger than ever despite how the outcome is like.

  2. Any new introduction of technology has it’s benefits and negatives. For instance, the invention of the mobile phone has positively benefited the lives of millions of people by giving them instant communication to people far away, however, this has also benefited the lives of criminals, giving them the ability to plan cordinated attacks. I do agree with you that social media has caused a mass shift in the lives of millions of people of not interacting with each other in person as much as they did in the past but rather online. However, who is to say that is necessarily a bad thing and not a choice of prefence. Furthermore, as technology continues to advance, we also need to continue to adapt to it.

  3. Yes it is ridiculous to see how much an impact social media is having in people’s lives nowadays. Obviously, social media has become part of our daily lives and it certainly has a negative effect in our lives and society. As you mentioned earlier, people are so obsessed with their phone to the point where they can’t have a face to face conversation with friends anymore. So true. People become addicted on social networking sites like facebook, instagram, twitter etc. They become so dependent on the technology and forgot how to socialise in face to-face where these on-line communication frequently takes the place of real life nowadays. Back in the early days when computer did not exist, they only used land line telephone to communicate with family and friends. People used to live a simple life and had more time for their family and friends. What the world has become today is well beyond everyone’s expectation. It is remarkable to see how fast technology has advanced over the last three decades. I’m not surprised that today’s society especially the young generations are so addicted to the latest networking technology. It is good to see that we are moving towards a more connected world in that perspective as it has made astonishing progress in material prosperity over the last 3 to 4 decades. Making this world a more accessible and a better place to live.

  5. I definitely agree with this! It’s crazy to think about the significance social media has played in governing our lives. On a daily basis, we tend to rely on social media to the point at which it has become a necessity…Regardless, we must adapt to the evolution that has become the era of the social media dominion. Like you said, we do need to turn our focus on how social media can be utilised at its full potential!!! With a little bit of effort, we can fulfil the potential of social media for the greater good.
